World Blood Donor Day 2023: WHO decries acute blood shortage in Nigeria, advocates for voluntary donors

World Blood Donor Day, WBDD, is celebrated annually and globally on the 14th of June .
World Health Organization WHO, decries acute blood shortage in Nigeria and other low income countries, women and children are mostly affected.
To ensure that everyone who needs transfusion has access to safe blood, WHO recommends all countries to have Voluntary unpaid blood donors who donate regularly.
The slogan for this year, which is Give Blood , Give Plasma, Share life , Share often , focuses on Patients in need of Life Long Transfusion Support. This emphasizes on the role a blood donor can play in donating freely the Valuable Gift of Blood.
On the 14th of June, countries round the world celebrate the WBDD.
This event helps to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and it’s availability.
Some of the Objectives of WBDD 2023 is to Celebrate and thank individuals who donate regularly .
To highlight critical roles of Voluntary non remunerated regular blood donation.
Encourage young and healthy people to donate regularly .
To mobilize support at National and global level.
WHO says safe blood is essential for helping people of all ages, aside this, there other numerous benefits of donating .
The chief benefit is that donating blood does not only save lives, it also cleanses blood of the donor by replacing old blood with new blood.
Other benefits are , you get your blood tested for : Hiv, hepatitis B and C etc.
WHO stated that safe blood is essential for helping :
people of all ages, women in labour, people who suffer from disease, accident victims .
Blood is universal and is needed to save lives.
